Diego Fabbri’s plays have been interpreted as part of the “theatre of ideas”. The playwright was inspired by many European writers. Among these Dostoevsky’s novels had a great influence on him. In particular the legend of the Grand Inquisitor, which is present in the first book of the novel The Brothers Karamazov, is quoted in Al Dio ignoto. Moreover, Fabbri also uses two other well-known Russian literary works: A. Blok’s The Twelve and Tales of a Russian Pilgrim. What is the thread that connects in Al Dio ignoto the passages from these Russian works? How do they interact within the comedy in two acts by Fabbri? What is the message that the Italian playwright wants to convey to the public by using them? This article by Antonella Cavazza tries to answer these questions and in so doing, offers some important suggestions for a better understanding and analysis of Fabbri’s last play.
