This article examines the reunion between the exiled musicians of the New Chilean Song (NCCh) and Chilean audiences, during the 1988 plebiscite campaign. First, we will focus on some of the events of musical exile which took place between 1973 and 1988 in order to illustrate the change of mind in regard to artistic and political activity. We examine, specifically, the causes of disaffection between the NCCh and the Chilean Communist Party. Secondly, we examine the return of these exiled musicians in the late 1980s, describing their musical and political activities during the last days of the 1988 plebiscite campaign. In this regard, we were interested on examining the perception and reception, often problematic, of these musicians. In general terms, this article seeks to demonstrate how the political and musical debates developed during the exile preestablished the role asumed by the musicians of the NCCh in the plebiscite campaign of 1988 in Chile.
