With the rise of various practices of publishing (making literature available to the public), it seems necessary to better frame and define what is increasingly referred to as the “literary arts”, a term that refers to the idea of “living literature”, which unfolds outside the book. Closer consideration of these practices supposes to situate them within North American and European literary circles, to see the state of critical discourse about them and to reflect further on their terminological capture. Text-based events, text exhibitions, and mediated literary texts: all literary arts can be gathered under these three headings according to the relationship that texts maintain with the medium, the public and the socio-cultural context. A proposal for an inventory and classification of current practices is submitted to the community, in order to give institutional existence to these new ways of publishing literature.
