This paper investigates the means of argumentation in familiar letters written by Chinese-speaking learners of French as a foreign language at B2 level. The letters are contrasted with those of native French speakers and native Chinese speakers representing a control group. The results show some contrasts between the native groups. We also see that the learners use some of the same argumentative strategies as the native French speakers, but we also attest to the influences of their native language in the choice of persuasive devices.
