Abstract Taking ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic transmission as the research object，it is composed of four single planetary gearsets and five shift elements. The transmission routes of the automatic transmission are analyzed. Based on basic theory of lever method， equivalent leverage diagrams of each gear are established. The formulas of transmission ratio of each gear are calculated. The research result provides a theoretical basis for the design of automatic transmission.
