The effectiveness of mindfulness-based art therapy (MBAT) on stress and lifestyle among pregnant women referred to Neyshabur health centers

Introduction Pregnant women experience more stress during pregnancy and this stress affects their lifestyle. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of art therapy based on mindfulness as a new group intervention in psychotherapy on reducing stress and improving the lifestyle of pregnant women referred to Neyshabur urban health centers in 2018. Materials and Methods In a pre-test-post-test intervention with a control group, 84 pregnant women aged 15 to 45 years were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. They replied a short version of the Orly and Girdano stress scale and the Walker Health Promotion Lifestyle Questionnaire. The experimental group received 10 weeks of mindfulness-based art therapy and one month after the intervention, both groups were evaluated again with the same tools, and the data were analyzed with SPSS 20 software and statistical tests including chi-square and covariance analysis. Results The difference between the two experimental groups mindfulness‐based art therapy (MBAT) and the control group in terms of subscales of Physical activity, nutrition, stress management, spiritual growth, interpersonal relationships, responsibility, haste, competitiveness, greed, doing things without proper planning in the post-test phase was significant (P <0.001, P = 78.89 P). Conclusion Due to the usefulness of mindfulness-based art therapy on reducing stress and improving lifestyle, the use of this new method in other age groups and populations is recommended
