Based on the identification of an interdependence between the relational pattern of organization of the PSDB (SP) and the geographic electoral base of the party, the period between 1988 and 1998, this paper presents an analysis of the party and offers some explanations for the organizational dynamics of its first decadeof existence. It is evident that its functional dynamics follows from the relations between political actors, who consider the institutional aspects to establish their political and electoral strategies. The organizational position of the actor is builtthrough relational ties and access to resources offered by the institution. This process is political capital that circulates inside the party and guarantee its organizational dynamics.
