Deskripsi
The ST7 clay wattle was discovered at the Lède du Gurp site, known for its almost continuous stratigraphic sequence from the Mesolithic to the Iron Age, and regularly unearthed due to erosion of the sandy coast.Wattle has been dated between 3325 and 2940 BC and has no equivalent at other Neolithic sites in France. Its exceptional conservation justified the continuation of an in-depth study, but this could not be envisaged without prior consolidation of the whole.ARC-Nucléart intervened in order to build a structure that could support the fragile monumental basketry, a transport frame, and proceed in its premises to a consolidation by impregnation with polyethylene glycol resin followed by controlled drying. The study continued in Grenoble where archaeologists were able to excavate the inside of the clay and expand the range of information provided by this unique object.Several interpretations can be envisaged as to the function of the ST7 wattle: it could either be used as a storage tank for brine or as a fresh water reserve for rinsing the sandblast, or it could support a fresh water collection point, or it could be used as a container in which the sandblast was rinsed. From its removal from the field to its stabilization for a museographic display at the Musée d'Aquitaine (Bordeaux), the object was the subject of close collaboration between archaeologists from the Ausonius Institute and the restorers from Arc Nucléart, who alternately took over to ensure its rescue.
