<p align="justify" ><b>Resumo:</b> O objetivo deste artigo é retratar e analisar a presença da família na trajetória do sistema de proteção social brasileiro seja como sujeito de direitos e/ou como agente de proteção social aos seus membros. Bem como desvendar as contradições de sua recente ascensão à cena pública e inserção nas ações públicas, na forma de centralidade na política social, em especial na Assistência Social. <br><br><b>Abstract:</b> The present paper aims at portraying and analyzing the role of the family in the history of the Brazilian social protection system, both in the light of its rights as a group and/or of its active role in the social protection of its members. It also reveals the contradictions of the recent prominence of the family on the public sphere and its inclusion in the governmental actions, as it assumes a central position in the social policies, and especially in the Social Welfare agenda.</p>
