Deskripsi

Eros, Thanatos and Sisyphus are three mythological character, whose features are highly relevant to understand the bodily transformations of the second modernity, especially in bodybuilding. Basing our research on qualitative methods – 120 direct observations and 30 in-depth interviews – we bring about the existence of “the trilemma in bodybuilding”. Such a trilemma involves the impossibility for a bodybuilder to refer simultaneously to the three aforementioned mythological characters. The lesson that can be drawn is first the diversity in personal systems of preferences in bodybuilding, as far as the level in commitment is concerned. Second, bodybuilding deals with risk but also sometimes with uncertainty, which means that a bodybuilder can be endangered in this sport since his/her involvement is not under control.
