Deskripsi
In the following article, the results of an investigation on the whaling activity carried out in Paita during the second half of the 20th century are presented, a period in which several companies operated in the same place: Compañía Ballenera del Norte (1957-1966), Ballenera del Kinkai (1967-1977) and Ballenera Victoria del Mar (1977-1985).In particular, we will focus on the machinery used in the plant, describing its production lines, initially focused on the production of oil. However, at the end of the 1960s, Japanese capital entered this whaling industry, redirecting whaling towards obtaining meat, especially for consumption in the Japanese market. In this new context dominated by the Japanese, there is an interesting experience of making sausages with whale meat, intended mainly for the Peruvian public. To develop this work, workers from the Paita whaling plant were interviewed, a documentation and bibliographic review work was carried out in the National Library of Peru (Lima). Documents and bibliography compiled in more than 10 years of research on whaling in Chile and South America were also studied.
