The article illustrates the Abitare Mediterraneo project which has the aim of promoting industrial research and pre-competitive development for the integration of technological and architectural innovation and the energy-saving and environmental sustainability in the building projects in Mediterranean areas. The concept underlying the research is the idea of an «open system» as a structured and shared knowledge by means of which those involved in the construction sector can collaborate and encourage the development of building initiatives focused on high energy efficacy. The research will contribute operatively, proposing a formula to create a synergy between the research and production in the building sector. The research also involves a «construction model» to adopt for architecture in Mediterranean areas.
