Deskripsi

The article undertakes a review of the stereotypes still present in the field of the history of education in Lyon. It is based on a careful statistical evaluation to show the role of religious congregations in public education by showing the progress and, from 1860 onwards, the obstacles. It also analyses the interplay of ideological forces that makes Lyon an early pole of secularism. But it also questions the limits of ideological struggles to highlight the social demand for education, which is a driving force and leads to putting schools, whatever their orientation, at the service of the populations.
