In 1975, Dorothy Day wrote, “It will be Chuck Smith, in West Virginia, who will be writing about agronomic universities or farming communes—that aspect of Peter [Maurin]’s program that we New Yorkers have never been able to get off the ground.” This paper discusses Chuck Smith, on whom Day pinned her hopes, and the Catholic Worker farm in West Virginia that he co-founded.
