ABSTRAK: Masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah bagaimanakah kesantunan berbahasa polisi dan masyarakat pada pemeriksaan lalu   lintas di Kota Makassar. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kesantunan berbahasa polisi terhadap masyarakat dan kesantunan berbahasa masyarakat terhadap polisi pada pemeriksaan lalu lintas di Kota Makassar. Jenis penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif yaitu mendeskripsikan wujud kesantunan berbahasa polisi dan masyarakat dalam pemeriksaan lalu lintas di Kota Makassar. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa tuturan-tuturan yang menunjukkan wujud kesantunan berbahasa polisi dan masyarakat dalam pemeriksaan lalu lintas di Kota Makassar. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah sepuluh orang polisi lalu lintas Poltabes Makassar. Teknik pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini adalah teknik observasi, teknik rekam, dan teknik catat. Teknik analisis data dalam penelitian ini adalah reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan/verifikasi sedangkan teori yang digunakan dalam menganalisis data adalah teori kesantunan berbahasa Geoffery Leech. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bentuk maksim kesantunan berbahasa polisi terhadap masyarakat pada pemeriksaan lalu lintas di wilayah Kota Makassar direpresentasikan dalam maksim kebijaksanaan dan maksim penghargaan. Sedangkan maksim yg digunakan masyarakat kepada polisi adalah   maksim pemufakatn dan pengharagaan yang ditinjau dari maksim kesantunan berbahasa Geoffrey Leech. KATA KUNCI: Kesantunan; berbahasa; masyarakat; polisi.     THE PROSPEROUS LANGUAGE PROVERB BETWEEN THE POLICE AND THE COMMUNITY AT TRAFFIC INSPECTIONS  ABSTRACT: The problem in this study is how the politeness of the language of the police and the public at traffic checks in Makassar City. Therefore, this study aims to describe the politeness of the language of the police towards the community and the politeness of the language of the community towards the police at the traffic check in the Makassar City. This type of research is a qualitative study that illustrates the form of politeness in the language of the police and the community in traffic checks in the city of Makassar. The data in this study are in the form of speeches showing the form of politeness in the language of the police and the community in traffic checks in Makassar City. The subjects in this study were ten traffic police officers from the Makassar Regional Police. Data collection techniques in this study were observation techniques, recording techniques, and note taking techniques. Data analysis techniques in this study are data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions / verification while the theory used in analyzing data is the politeness theory of the Leof Geoffery language. The results of the study showed the form of politeness maxim politeness of the police towards the public at the traffic inspection in the Makassar City area was represented in the maxim of wisdom and maxim of appreciation. Whereas the proverb used by the public to the police is the proverbial agreement and appreciation in terms of politeness of the Geoffrey Leech proverb.
