Deskripsi

The excitement around the “woman question” at the turn of the 20th century in Argentina makes the catholicism think about new topics that were not present in its cosmovision like the political rights of the women. The journalism is a tool used by the Catholics that influences the process of socialization by receiving, processing and adapting sexual definitions. This paper examines the representations of gender around the civic capacities of the women through the catholic press that is published in Bahia Blanca and circulates in the area of influence during the first three decades of the last century. The Catholics share the hegemonic idea of sexual difference and analyze the problem of the political rights of the women by centering in the concepts of maternity and domestic life. Even if they do not impulse the constitution of a citizenship in a modern way for the women, some of them support certain advances in the feminine condition, like the vote or the possibility of being elected.
