Deskripsi
The fertile banks of Nabão River have always been a landmark of the region’s natural landscape. In 1160, the Castelo dos Templários and its town established themselves upon a hill by the river, shaping a Place that is still a national reference today. In the 15th Century, Infant D. Henrique founded the Vila de Baixo in the floodplain, establishing a connection with the river along a main axis that led towards the old bridge. Later the town stretched itself beyond the Nabão. This river always provided hydraulic energy through norias and dams as several factories were also constructed along its stream during the industrialization era. Tomar’s cultural landscape is defined by the symbolism of Convento de Cristo in addition to the relationship between the town and the organic stream of Nabão River
