purpose: The aim of this paper was to investigate the reciprocal link between ontologies, known as advanced tools in the representation of information, and knowledge management, thought of as an appropriate bedrock to use ontologies.Methodology: The library method was employed to conduct this study, and the necessary information was provided through searching for papers and printed and electronic sources of information.Using the desk method, this paper investigated the concepts of ontology and knowledge management and also the link between them.Findings: Nowadays organizations need to apply ontologies in the processes pertaining to the available knowledge more than before. The reason is that ontology is considered a powerful tool which is able to represent conceptual knowledge in organizations. It also helps the dynamism of organizational knowledge to a great extent.Conclusion: Providing a set of formal definitions for the concepts of an area and determining the relationships among them, ontology lays the groundwork for the creation of a knowledge base in that subject area. This is considered to be the value added in the implementation of organizational knowledge management, particularly in specialized agencies.
