A Union in the Safavid Army: The Kurchis

Shah Ismail founded Safavid Empire at 1501 with aid of Turkomen groups who mostly coming from Anatolia region, thus he laid the foundation of a new empire which would act on the scene of the history for almost 235 years. The Turkomen groups who were called as kızılbashes had a politics and military role in the empire. Since his failure was recognized after the Chaldiran war, an improvement with regard to army was required, and a reform was made in the reign of Shah Abbas. By that reform, kurchis to whom we are familiar since the era of Shah Ismail, played an effective role in the empire by becoming a systematic population. This article reveals the roles of kurchis in Safavid army and changes in the empire organization
