Deskripsi
This review aims to summarize the latest research findings regarding the impact of sleep disorders, particularly insomnia, on cardiovascular disease. As cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries, many studies have been conducted to investigate the role of sleep disorders as an additional factor that can elevate cardiovascular risk. Among other factors, sleep disorders have been found to cause hormonal dysregulation and impaired neurotransmission leading to increased appetite and subsequent weight gain, thereby elevating the risk of diabetes mellitus. In the case of insomnia, not only does it prevent the physiological drop in blood pressure (dipping) at night, but it also leads to a rise in blood pressure during the night (reverse dipping). These dysregulations associated with insomnia contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Regular moderate physical activity, on the other hand, has been shown to improve sleep quality and cardiovascular health.
