How has the Montreal newspaper Le Devoir, whose first objective was not its commercial viability, managed to survive since 1910 under apparently hostile conditions? The analysis of Le Devoir’s financial reports from its early beginnings until now allows the authors to determine when, where and under what circumstances the newspaper owners found the necessary material resources and whether or not these commercial operations were profitable or not.
