The importance of a vertical density structure is discussed<br />for what the liydrologic response and circulation pattern of small<br />basins are concerned. The existence of a density stratification is parameterized<br />through a penetration depth of vertical mixing, and different physical<br />situations are analyzed under a specific set of model assumptions and<br />in basins of sizes similar to the Adriatic Sea.<br />A specific application is made for the Winter hydrological situation<br />in the Adriatic.
