AIM: To observe the clinical effects of moisturizing eye decoction combined with artificial tears in the treatment of ophthalmoxerosis.<p>METHODS: A randomized controlled clinical research method was employed. One hundred-sixty patients diagnosed with ophthalmoxerosis were equally divided into a treatment group and a control group. In the treatment group, patients were given one dose per day of the moisturizing eye decoction as well as artificial tear drops three times a day. The patients in the control group were treated with artificial tears drops three times a day. The course of treatment was 3mo. Dry-eye symptoms, tear break-up time(BUT)by the slit lamp, the time of tear secretion(Schirmers Ⅰ test), corneal fluorescein staining(FL), and curative effects were observed before treatment as well as in the first and third months after treatment.<p>RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of BUT, SⅠt, and FL before treatment(<i>P</i>>0.05). After treatment in the first and the third months, the BUT, SⅠt, FL, and curative effects were significantly different between the two groups(<i>P</i><0.05).<p>CONCLUSION: Moisturizing eye decoction combined with artificial tears in the treatment of ophthalmoxerosis can improve efficacy.
