On October 26, 2016, during a presentation in front of businessmen and the media, the Mexican President, Enrique Peña Nieto, made a comment that aroused great controversy. The next day, on the cover of some important newspapers in Mexico appeared different paraphrases that referred to Peña Nieto’s comment. The purpose of this article is to introduce the main categories of the Dialogical Approach of Argumentation and Polyphony (which is currently in a formative stage under the direction of Maria Marta Garcia Negroni) in order to analyze the different discursive-scenarios constructed in relation to that comment. The analysis emphasizes the (inter-) subjective positioning, in dialogical terms, that underlies any statement,taking into account the different polyphonic and argumentative traces crystallized in these instances of reported speech.
