Deskripsi

The infinitive sentence in Breton is used as a subordinate and independent sentence. Although the word order in the finite sentence is VSO, the infinitive sentence has a different order which is SVO. Following Sproat’s (1985) approach for Welsh, Chomsky’s (1981) « Government and Binding » (GB) theory helps to explain the difference between the two surface orders in the finite sentence and the infinitive sentence. We will first present the aspects of GB necessary for the analysis, followed by a presentation of the data. We will then analyse the order of constituents in three types of infinitive sentences. Finally, we will study the case of two independent infinitive sentences: the one introduced by da and the one introduced by ha.
