Data and research within the domain of social attitudes towards work show that Portuguese people are strongly attracted to self-employment rather than to paid employment. However, socioeconomic mutations from the last decade contributed to raise interest regarding the attractiveness of Portuguese people for selfemployment. This article focus not only on the analysis of the evolution of social attitudes towards work in a period of time characterized by profound socioeconomic changes, namely the global economic recession of 2008, but also of the practices of individuals towards self-employment and entrepreneurship in Portugal.
